In the Dutch village Naarden every year around Easter the traditional performance of the Matthäus Passion takes place. Attending this yearly event in the grand church are often member of the Dutch Government, sometimes members of the Royal Family, and, as announced on this recording, the Queen of Belgium at that time. This tradition began in 1922 and is still current. A number of recordings on vinyl or CD have been released, but strangely enough a recording of the international renowned alto Aafje Heynis is lacking. The other singers are all Dutch, with exception of the bass Günther Horst. The soprano Erna Spoorenberg was world famous for her interpretations of the music of Bach, Händel and Mozart, and her Melisande under direction of Ernest Ansermet on Decca still stands as being one of the best recordings ever. The conductor Dr. Anthon van der Horst has conducted for years the Matthäus Passion in Naarden. It’s a performance that purists will dismiss as dated, but one many Dutchmen will surely still have fond memories of, not in the least because of the familiarity with this music on the radio.
