Elvira was one of Sutherland’s best roles. And the diva at her best was and is unsurpassed, as in this recording. However, the recording is more valued through the co-operation of tenor Rockwell Blake. Not one of the world’s most beautiful voices, but definitely the type for which Bellini wrote the part. He knows better than Luciano Pavarotti how to adjust to Sutherland and that makes this recording a specialty. The other soloists are well-known in their roles and together they create a true Belcanto party.
