Every recording with the bass Boris Christoff is a must. Curiously enough there are very few live-recordings of his star role as Boris Godunov. And the three recordings we know have all been made in The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This recording is absolutely the best of his Boris. The question is whether it’s Boris Christoff or the conductor Rafael Kubelik who inspire the singers, even the ones in minor roles, to such a tour de force.
