Curiously enough Le Roi D’Y only became and stayed popular in the French theatres. Only the grand overture is known in the concert hall. It’s a miniature Lohengrin and one could easily exchange the desired cast. Only the tenor could create problems. The part of Margared belongs to one of the most interesting roles for a mezzo or dramatic soprano, as is obvious in the fragments we’ve chosen for you. The idea was originally to issue only Fiori FI-1140, but at the very last moment one of the works was cancelled and we’ve decided to offer our third choice. It seems a bit too much, but we’re convinced that if you start listening, you will not be bored for one moment. For a great part this is due to the singers who are at the height of their ability. The sound quality of the recording of 1967 is obviously to a lesser degree, but it shows the last sounds of a now deserted French tradition.
