The Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts was founded in 1948 by the composer Benjamin Britten, the singer Peter Pears and the writer-producer Eric Crozier. They centered their annual festival upon opera, but the Festival has evolved slowly over the years to encompass a wide range of music, performed year-round in a concert hall. The concert hall of Snape Maltings is of great interest. Not only is it successful in accommodating a generous music audience, it is in fact an old converted malt house.
Many great names, but especially friends of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears have performed at this festival, as shown in the remarkable recordings made during the leadership of the three organizers. Special attention will be drawn to the performance of the trio Galina Vishnevskaya, Peter Pears and Peter Glossop, even more by the repertory choice of tenor and baritone. Among others Elly Ameling, Hermann Prey and Janet Baker were a guarantee for sparkling Song evenings.
