Orchestra and Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, New York

Conductor James Levine

New York, Metropolitan Opera House
February 18, 1984

In this performance it’s obviously all about the Cassandre and Dido of Jessye Norman. Shirley Verrett had already performed both roles on a night in the Metropolitan, and that recording will also soon be available on Opera-Club.
Miss Norman’s Cassandre, known from video, possessed an overwhelming drama both vocally and physically. Her Dido is more lyric and demure, without the hysteria which can easily slip into this role. Perhaps we’re listening to the greatest Cassandre and Dido of all times, as we of no one who has surpassed her in these roles. Edward Sooter, who is known in the U.S.A. and certainly not an undeserving Wagner-tenor, has sung at the Metropolitan Florestan (Fidelio) and Tannhauser, among others. The other parts are well cast and it’s an enchanting adventure to listen to this performance.
