Of course Maria Callas has never been surpassed or even equalled in this role, nevertheless Leyla Gencer comes close. Like Callas, she really feels the role, but unfortunately misses the Callas-colours in her voice and fails occasionally in technique. She remains in second place, despite the fact that Anna Bolena was regularly programmed by opera houses. The other soloists are simply good, without for a moment coming close to Gencer’s quality. The recording has a lot of atmosphere which leaves you intrigued till the very last minute.
