This work as opera is better known as Giuseppe Verdi’s Luisa Miller, which is the only link between the two. With Verdi it’s the singers and conductor that make or break the work. With von Einem, who’s closer to the original of Schiller, the music comes first. During a world premiere, when one has a cast like this at his disposal, one certainly isn’t just curious about the musical form. After listening to this recording, one would say the singers remain the greatest attraction, and rightfully so.
