Orchestra and Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera

Conductor James Levine

New York, Metropolitan Opera House, Januari 26, 2002

In the first place this recording is about the title role of Plácido Domingo. During the same period the work was recorded in the studio. There he sounds rather inflexible, which is fatal for Mozart, but than again, he’s not a Mozart-tenor. In this live-recording he demonstrates less vocal technique, but is more straight forward, yet through his professionalism creates the necessary tension to the role.
It’s the ladies and conductor James Levine that make this recording worthwhile. James Levine takes control of the music and conducts the orchestra over the weak points. With H.K. Hong Ilia is not a weak, pathetic girl but a woman who knows what she wants. However, the star is Alexandra Deshorties who gets the most out of her role. Next to these two ladies A.S. Otter is disappointing and sounds unsurprising.
