It will always be a matter of personal preference as to what type of voice one would like to hear Violetta. Galina Vishnevskaya, a lyric-dramatic soprano, shows clearly why she is so unique in this role. You can’t actually compare her with any of her colleagues, and this recording is indispensable in a Traviata-discography. The other parts are well cast and conductor Khailin overdoes it a bit, but that’s part of the Russian temperament and feeling for drama.
